ENAMELLING WORKSHOP at Argentum Jewellery School Victoria, BC September 4 & 5 join visiting artist, experienced silversmith and instructor Melody Armstrong to learn the traditional technique of enamelling. Enamelling is the beautiful art of fusing powdered glass onto metal to create colourful and imaginative jewellery designs. In this fun, two-day workshop students will explore several different enamelling applications using copper as the base metal, and incorporating these into finished jewellery pieces. Before sifting the enamel onto the metal and firing in the kiln, we will be experimenting with sawing shapes, texturing, doming and fold forming. Students will leave the class with a new set of skills as well as a wide array of colourful jewellery pieces to take home and show off. https://www.argentumjewelleryschool.com/collections/specialty-classes/products/enamelling-workshop-september-4-5 https://www.argentumjewelleryschool.com/pages/melody-armstrong
Argentum is a silversmithing school and supply shop located in Market Square, the historic heart of downtown Victoria. With a commitment to preserving the art of traditional silversmithing, Argentum offers a selection of classes and workshops for every skill level, from beginner to professional, as well as other specialty workshops and events. We are expanding our course offerings to include more specialized and advanced techniques to cater to people in all areas of metalsmithing. We also offer private group and one-on-one lessons. Our fully-equipped and supervised studio is available for bench rentals, where jewellers can work independently in a supportive community setting. We rent on an hourly basis, by bulk hour punch cards or by monthly memberships. Argentum’s retail supply shop is a storefront and online shop providing quality tools, equipment, materials and gemstones. Argentum opened its doors in early 2019 with the vision of becoming a central hub of silversmithing knowledge, instruction and supply for the metalsmithing community of Vancouver Island. Argentum owner, Honor Chapman, has been a silversmith and gallery owner in Victoria's downtown core for over 20 years. Honor is the owner of Tonic Jewelry which is situated just above Argentum on the main floor of Market Square. She has brought her knowledge and understanding of the jewellery industry to life with her vision of filling a void in the area of silversmithing education on Vancouver Island. Argentum is the only jewellery school in the city, and one of only two locations on Vancouver Island that offers professional instruction in traditional silversmithing. 13-560 Johnson St, Victoria BC, Canada, V8W 3C6 This new jewellery collection will be showcased at The Flight Of Fancy , where you will find Fine Art + Exceptional Craft + Exquisite Studio Jewelry The Flight of Fancy is an award-winning art and craft gallery located in Bear River, Nova Scotia, Canada. I combine two layers, one layer is a dark oxidized textured band over top of a bright high polished silver layer. The textured layer is like a skin wrapping over the main wide band. These rings always feature a bold beautiful stone affixed prominently on top, sometimes in the centre and sometimes over the edge of the ring. The Sleeping Beauty Turquoise cushion shaped cabochon has a pure aqua blue color which shows very little to no veining and is surrounded by a shiny silver frame. Melody Armstrong’s artistic objective is to transfer her vision, creative passion and risk taking into her jewellery in an expressive way to arrive at exciting jewellery forms that elicit awe and inspiration, and personalize them in order to give her work a distinctive character. Melody’s jewellery designs testify to the textural dynamic and technical volition behind the work, seemingly to have evolved from organic origins taking on an industrial influence. The ever changing interplay of colors and textures creates dynamic contrasts – evoking a vividness of exquisite dimensions – which is rich, alluring and of the utmost elegance. Techniques employed in the Butterfly Wing Series include piercing the silver wing structures by sawing, then filing and sanding to perfect the shapes. The reactive metal - Niobium - is anodized using an electrical-chemical process where the voltage determines the colour outcome. The interference surface colours that are developed by this process mimics the interference colours of insect wings. Stone setting and riveting techniques are also incorporated, using the torch, pliers, hammers, and wire wrapping semi precious bead elements. Melody Armstrong is inspired by the delicateness of moths and butterflies and their complex nature, transferring that mysterious luminescence and lace-like aesthetic into a hard metal structure. By preserving the original organic design and beauty of the insect elements, she creates this series allowing the wearer to appreciate the jewellery object on the body as unique adornment.
